WOW 1998 (1997) For the third time ever, EMI, Word, and Provident music groups join forces to present WoW 1998, a fairly enjoyable production at least a "wow!" above the other two platinum-selling collections. Why? It still includes the typical Out of the Grey, Sandi Patty, Avalon, Amy Grant, etc.; it still offers glimpses of each included artist in the linear notes and a portion of the funds from WoW still benefit the CMT and GMAs. There's actually three reasons: 1. the songs. This year, WoW includes rock bands Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline, Third Day, and Jars of Clay. I love it because these guys made it to radio's top 10 this year. The rule of rock radio has begun! Not to say there's no pop. We've got SCC's "Let Us Pray," "Carry You," an Amy Grant exclusive, and Michael W. Smith's rockin' new "Missing Person" track. 2. the order of the songs. Listeners enjoy tracks 1-15 flowing naturally from one to the next instead of a throw-together of radio hits. 3. no gospel. To free up limited space on the 30-song WOW '98, label executives invented WoW Gospel 1998, a 2-CD compilation exclusively for Shirley Caesar and the like, modeled after you-know-what. In conclusion, WoW 1998 is the epitome of the WOWs. Miss it and you'll regret it for the rest of your life. Or at least until they make WoW 1999...
