swfNEWS
January 20, 2006 - List of top-sellling Chrisian albums released
By Scott Bush

The Christian Music Trade Association (CMTA) recently released its list of the top selling Christian and Gospel albums for 2005. To the surprise of no one, Switchfoot was the big winner of the year. They claimed top honors for Nothing Is Sound, selling nearly 450,000 copies. They also took fourth place on continued strong sales of The Beautiful Letdown, with over 400,000 sold. Casting Crowns nearly matched that success, however, following up their highly successful debut Casting Crowns (in seventh place with approximately 360,000 units sold), with a second place showing for Lifesong, selling over 430,000 copies. Crossover artists Relient K took advantage of exposure on MTV place third with their album, MMHMM, finishing just ahead of Switchfoot at over 421,000 sales.

The WoW series continues to be a big item in Christian and Gospel markets, charting four of the top thirteen selling albums of the year. Also found in this Top 20 list are such signature artists as Third Day (Wherever You Are – 12th), Chris Tomlin (Arriving – 14th) and Jeremy Camp (Restored – 15th). Longtime favorites Jars of Clay find themselves in 19th position with their Redemption Songs project, and the ever-present TobyMac rounds out the tally with Welcome to Diverse City. Other artists making the cut include the likes of Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Natalie Grant and Kirk Franklin. Even the guys who bridged the gap between Christmas and Rock Opera, Trans Siberian Orchestra, made it into 16th position with Christmas Eve (and Other Stories).

Also, the CMTA began tracking digital album downloads in the second half of 2005. Once again, Switchfoot took top honors, with Relient K and Casting Crowns exchanging second and third positions. The David Crowder Band checks in at number four with their release, Collision, and Chris Tomlin rounds out the top five.

It's no easy feat. Just ask Fleetwood Mac. Or Def Leppard. Or even Bruce Springsteen. Each of these artists are all too familiar with the daunting task of following a career-defining album (Rumours, Hysteria and Born in the U.S.A., for those keeping score) with one of equal or greater magnitude. All of this is, of course, old news to Switchfoot songwriters Jon and Tim Foreman... Read full review....

THE EARLY YEARS: 1997-2000 (2004)
If you thought the extent of Switchfoot's genius was just The Beautiful Letdown, then think again. Starting with the surf rock of The Legend of Chin and maturing through New Way To Be Human and Learning to Breathe, the years before their imminent fame were just as good. This 3-disc set has their first three albums so you can catch up on the action. In stores November 2nd.

THE BEAUTIFUL LETDOWN (2003)
As mere humans, we know failure only too well. And we should: we ourselves are a failure. We were created to bring glory to the Father, and, because of the intrusion of sin, fail to do so every day. All of this, Switchfoot says, is the reason that we are a "beautiful letdown," - we are the Lord's beautiful creations who have been corrupted by sin. Read full review....

LEARNING TO BREATHE (2000)
New Way to Be Human was 1999's summer-defining, industry-consuming heavyweight, and Switchfoot's latest steps in where it left off. Keeping human ways "new," and every day fresh are the themes of Learning to Breathe, an unconquerable, but not necessarily advanced, project. Both unsettled and unmoved, Learning to Breathe greets the sunrise with a smile, and rocks with an all-embracing message that audiences need to hear. "We don't have to slow back down." THE LEGEND OF CHIN (1997)
I was a month away from seventeen. All I knew about music was that I didn't like rap or country. I attended more concerts than movies. I owned as many CDs as my friends owned nail polish and shoes. I spent more time rocking out to whatever "seemed cool" than I ever did on the phone. I wasn't your typical teenager, so I got a bit mad when Jon Foreman sang to me, "I don't wanna read the book / I'll watch the movie / 'Cause it's not me / I'm just like everybody else my age" ("Chem 6A"). He was 21. Brother Tim was a mere 18. Read full review....
