Dear Q... Need to find out if anyone knows what is meant in the verses of the song "All I Want Is You" by delirious?. The lyrics of delirious?'s "All I Want Is You" have always struck me as interesting, and your question helped me to go deeper in looking for it's meaning. Please note that nearly all artists have songs that can be seen with dozens of different meanings, and my take here is only my opinion. I'll go line-by-line with "All I Want Is You" and we'll hopefully gain some insight into this cut: Did I tell you it was wine when really it was water? I walked upon the wine, it went to my head and I faltered. Martin (delirious?'s songwriter, lead vocalist) seems to be relating a Christian trying to "draw in" the world to the message of Christ through some display of miracles. The Christian discussed seems to have undergone a time of questioning, rethinking and change of mindset. He addresses his unsaved friends with a tone of humility in the line "walking upon wine...falter"—alluding to Christ's walking on sea in light of the realization that it was HIS power as God that accomplished it. I've tried to heal your bones, I've tried to tell your future. Maybe I should just call up my friends, play some music Be myself... All I want is You Hopeless over a faith he thought real, the aforementioned believer retreated to his friends and music, certainly two big escapes in our world. The chorus line seems to be his eventual hope and comfort, and not a genuine resolve to the conflict in verse one. Struggle continues in verse 2... Did I tell you it was fine to come and question nothing? To look upon the sign as the answer to it all These lines bring credibility to the above drama I proposed, with this believer having some sort of breakthrough in that he realizes faith doesn't tie reasoning behind your back. Oh why do I feel poor? Why do I feel nervous? The perspective is a rhetorical question by that believer again. Christians are still human, and have human responses and reactions—a new birth in Christ doesn't quell the human aspect of us at all, only give us a deeper meaning for life, a mission and purpose. I think it's time to put on my God shoes And do what I'm here for - raise the flag again. All I want is You A "religion" rather than relationship with God seems the point for these lines, as "God shoes" would mean a returning to the "Christian subculture" after being confused by the complexity of relating to the world as Christ would. "Raising the flag" is a connotation to raising up Christ as the flag, or identity, you have. Problem is that's it's not a Holy Spirit inspired standard for choices, relationships and influences, but the "holier than thou" false legalism we often impose on ourselves to someone earn our way to Heaven. That is totally wrong and seen as such. Transformation for this person still awaits. Can I be free from the chains of my religion? They wrap around my head and they blind my eyes of faith Step one in having a sustained passion for Christ is seeing your problem, which is so difficult because Satan's first tactic is to blind you with emotions, attachment, false happiness, etc. thus this revelation came about only by the Holy Spirit and His vision and total insight into the heart and motives of this Christian, whose saw the "chains of religion" shackling the freedom Christ desired for him. And I feel dangerous 'cos I hunger for the truth This tightrope's swinging high When we thirst and pursue to know more of God, we see more of our awful heart condition...and run to repentance. A heart change is evident with the next line, where our human nature is seen as a tightrope, and we narrowly miss falling from whatever pedestal we set up. Let's see what this transformed Christian's new response is to performing to get people's approval.... No turning back Teach me to fly All I want is You He's jumping off the tightrope of self-centered performance into the grace and mystery and risk God calls into when we yield our will to His. "All I want is You, Lord." The chorus line is indeed a fitting resolve to this internal drama.
