Dear Q...

Why do you think all these artists are taking the worship road? Is it a trend that delirious? started or does it stem from the old school Petra Praise - the rock cries out?

It certainly is a trend, from Cheri Keaggy to Age of Faith, from the Insyderz to Kim Hill, everybody's making worship Cd's. While in no way an outgrowth of the movement, delirious? was inspired by Kevin Prosch and local Vineyard assemblies in their Cutting Edge approach to worship - yet the bulk of their worship has gone mainly unnoticed and can't be credited as inspiring many other artists in the U.S. As Petra goes, their sun seems to have set in the music arena, and their Praise albums were just ahead of the times, if you will. To hear the record labels tell it, a genuine leaning of the Spirit has come upon (insert artist name), and this project complements their regular style. Obviously this does go beyond marketing - Hosanna! Music has tripled in sales since 1990, and Vineyard has released similar reports, both before they stepped up magazine advertising and event sponsorship that sees them so widely known today. Bands just seem to be realizing, at concerts, summer festivals, and possibly church, that worship is a deeper experience than merely a concert, truly communing with God and seeing Him in His glory and majesty. While the more "fun" mixes of Insyderz and Nitro Praise are a far cry from hymn-singing backed by the church organist, it's still a precious incense unto the Lord, an offering of praise that transcends production, ability and style.
